Root Canal Treatment
Why do I need root canal treatment?
Inside your tooth is something called the tooth pulp. This consists of nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay or tooth fracture can expose the pulp to bacteria in your saliva and cause the pulp to die.
When the pulp becomes infected it can spread through the tooth and surrounding tissues causing pain and swelling.
Root canal treatment can save your tooth. If the infection is left untreated, you may end up losing the whole tooth.
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is a process where the inflamed or dead pulp from the inside of a tooth is removed. The canals of the tooth are then cleaned, sterilised and shaped allowing the root canals to be sealed with a filling material to prevent further infection.
The treatment normally takes a number of appointments, depending on the complexity of the tooth and the severity of any infection.
Afterwards, a root canal treated tooth usually needs a crown to protect the tooth ensuring the best long-term success.
